The Shield and the Virus
A few months ago, I would think it weird to see someone walking down the street wearing a curved plastic on the face. But not in the new norm of today. With the second waves of infection from COVID-19, you couldn't go anywhere in Angeles City without wearing face shields and face masks. The use of these protective coverings is now mandatory in all public places. As a matter of fact, face shields have become the new fashion accessory of 2020.
Though wearing this Plexiglas panel over my face may seem bothersome to me, this clear plastic barrier serves as an added protection that "could play a role" in preventing the spread of the coronavirus.
Walking around downtown Angeles with my face shield on, my thoughts directed me to Deuteronomy 6:6-9. As much as it is required to wear face shields to protect ourselves from being exposed to the droplet-spread respiratory virus, we should also put on the protective gear from a more lethal virus.
Sin is the viral disease that will draw us away from our love and joy in the Lord. It weakens our defense to fight off the fiery darts of our invisible enemy (Ephesians 6). When we allow sin to invade the inside of our hearts and mind, it reproduces. It multiplies causing widespread infection. Thus, it leads to serious complications and death. (Romans 8:6)
We are all at risk to suffer because of this viral disease. Therefore, the Health Care Provider outlined the preventive plan to Moses:
- And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart
- And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children
- And shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up
- And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand
- And they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes
- And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house and on thy gates
