Thrown into the Pit

Not the place he expected to be. Down there was dark. Cold. Empty.

Just a seventeen-year-old boy. And he was left alone to die in a pit. His brothers hated him. That’s why. They hated his dreams. His coat of many colors. His close relationship with their father. They totally despised him.

Get rid of him. This evil plan as they looked at him with disdain. Seized. Stripped. And this unwanted brother found himself trapped in a pit.

Was he scared? Probably. Were there questions in his mind? He didn’t get the answers right away. Was he crying? He just had to face the fact that he was abandoned. Down in the pit. With no escape.

It must be terrifying when you don’t understand why things happen. When nothing makes any sense. When everything seems to go wrong. When you find yourself in a dark pit. Pit of rejection. Of humiliation. Of opposition. Of pressures. Of misfortunes.

Time went by. An hour. Days. Or years. It didn’t matter how long he stayed down there. He waited. Waited for mercy. But he got more sufferings instead.

Through his sufferings, he saw that in his moment of trial and persecution, the LORD is with him. That in time of trouble, the LORD is with him. That in his anguish and pain, the LORD is with him. Because he needed to understand God's purpose in his life. He needed to have the right perspective on the Mighty One who controls his every circumstance. He needed these tests of life to increase his faith in God. Prepare him for the job he was called to do. Prove him to be a man of character. So that one day he'll be able to say to his brothers, "You thought evil against me, but God meant it unto good."
